End-Of-Programme Evaluation Of The Kusuma Schools Partnership Initiative

In July 2018, Kusuma Trust UK commissioned Collaborative Research & Dissemination (CORD) for an end-of-programme evaluation of the Kusuma Schools Partnership Initiative. This has been focused on improving access to quality secondary education and other life opportunities for disadvantaged children and young people in Odisha and UP, and has been undertaken from 2013-2018. The main purpose of the evaluation is to highlight key lessons learned and identify examples of good practice for wider dissemination.

The evaluation will be based on a study of 25 schools in Sambalpur district in Odisha and 25 schools in Hardoi district, which were the focus the Kusuma intervention. A similar number of control schools in both districts are part of the study. Mixed research methods (qualitative and quantitative) combined with a staged approach has been selected as the research design most appropriate for answering key research questions.

In the first stage, a review of relevant and existing documentary evidence will be undertaken to identify pre- and post-intervention data and key trends over the past five years. In the second stage, school-level data will be collected and a range of stakeholder perspectives explored. This includes those associated with Kusuma intervention schools (Principals, teachers, SMDC members), as well as district education officials, and the staff of Kusuma Foundation. This approach will be adapted for evaluating trends in selected control/comparison schools, as appropriate. In the third stage, students currently enrolled in intervention schools will be interviewed at their homes to get their feedback on the Kusuma initiative and on the quality of secondary schooling they are able to access, as well as gain insights into their home environment.
